Un Château sur la Garonne, chateau for rent in France

This very special property with its fairytale architecture is located in France’s Haute-Garonne department in south-west France. Overlooking the Garonne river in stately splendour, it is on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route which leads to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The chateau was built in 1515 during the transition between the Gothic and Renaissance periods and has all the castle features one could hope for – turrets, grand fireplaces and a coat of arms on the façade. It was fully refurbished in the 19th century and is now listed as a historical monument. The property and its grounds attest to a long history of nobility and aristocracy, and guests will slip seamlessly into the role of chateau life! The décor is hallmarked with the blend of rustic elegance and modern-day luxury that the French do so well.

The chateau lies within walking distance of a nearby village and stands amid 40 hectares of peaceful, private grounds, featuring a wide variety of mature trees including oak, pine, ash, Douglas firs and birch, which give the garden character and depth as well as shade from the hot summer sunshine. All this is set against the scenic backdrop of the Pyrenees mountains.

The chateau has its own wine cellar for wine tasting, a billiards room for entertainment, and a summer kitchen outside near the heated swimming pool. Whether you’re looking for a glamorous location for your holiday or you are celebrating a special occasion, this chateau won’t disappoint.

Make the most of your stay in the Haute-Garonne and explore the south-west of France while you’re here; the Gers, Pyrenees and Ariège regions are on the doorstep and packed with things to do. Musts include Gargas and its prehistoric caves; the ancient Roman town of St Lizier; Foix, which is lorded over by the Castle of the Counts of Foix; and the town of Albi which is a UNESCO heritage site.

The vibrant town of Toulouse, known as the pink town, is also within easy reach of the property; take in Le Capitole, the impressive town hall, the Cité de l’Espace (space centre) which is sure to keep the whole family happy for the day, the St Sernin basilica and the Couvent des Jacobins.

Sports enthusiasts are well catered for, starting with two tennis courts that are a short walk from the property in the village. Keen cyclists can pit their peddle power against the legendary Tour de France mountain passes such as Col de Peyresourde, while golfers will be spoilt for choice with no less than three courses in the vicinity: Salies du Salat (5-minute drive), Montréjeau (20-minute drive) and La Bastide de Serou (40-minute drive). For something more exhilarating, head to the Antignac nautical club for white-water rafting and kayaking.

The south-west of France prides itself on its fine terroir products, and food is taken very seriously. Don’t leave without tasting some authentic foie-gras (goose liver pâté) and a cassoulet (bean casserole) – washed down with the appropriate pairing of great local wines of course! Restaurant Le Castet is just a few miles down the road and serves a delicious duck breast specialty, magret en croûte de sel, and if you fancy venturing further out (70 km), then the restaurant run by French Michelin-starred TV chef Michel Sarran is worth the trip.

Gourmet excursions can be arranged for guests to visit local food and wine growers and learn more about French cuisine and art de vivre with workshops such as Cheese and Wine Pairings.

This chateau can comfortably accommodate 4 to 5 families with children or 9 couples.
