Le Château des Trophées – Beautiful French château for rent in Sarthe

Château des Trophées is a forest estate and the family home of a keen hunter.

The Sarthe countryside is a well-kept secret in north-west France just an hour from Paris. This country estate spans 400 hectares and includes a forest, rivers, ponds, grassy grounds, and its own vegetable garden. Guests are free to explore and enjoy the estate on foot, bicycle or horseback. Fresh air and the great outdoors will figure high on the agenda of your stay and leave you feeling relaxed and revigorated. There is a wealth of wildlife to observe in the forest, with deer, boar and game roaming the estate in various numbers depending on the season and time of day. It is not unusual to happen across a boar and its young grazing peacefully in the forest, and in September and October you can expect to hear the mating call of the deer. Guests who are less likely to be enthralled by such encounters can rest assured – the property is separated from the forest by a dry moat. This is a holiday chateau in an enchanting setting with plenty of space to simply roam and breathe.

The chateau dates from the 18th century and is a listed building. The décor is very much that of a noble family and filled with souvenirs of travel and hunting adventures. The reception rooms and master bedroom feature the period furniture and large portraits to be expected of an aristocratic residence. Hunting trophies are proudly displayed throughout the property and particularly in the drawing room. Admittedly, this unusual style will appeal to a select audience.

The chateau can accommodate up to fifteen people and has twelve bedrooms. There are five ornate bedrooms on the first floor – two en-suite doubles and three singles – and five standard rooms on the second floor. Relaxation facilities are also on the second floor, including a sauna, jacuzzi, games and television room, gym (currently being installed) with an elliptical bike, and a table tennis table.

Outdoor facilities include a newly refurbished hard-surface tennis court and a swimming pool. And, of course, the vast grounds are ideal for running, walking or playing.

Of course, hunting can also be arranged at an additional cost.

Catering services are also available upon request at extra cost.

The chateau and the estate are extensive in themselves, however there is also lots to do and see beyond the castle gates. The property is ideally located for visiting Paris, the Loire Valley and Normandy.

The Sarthe region enjoys all the rural charm of the countryside coupled with excellent access to Paris and is particularly famous for being home to the 24 Hours of Le Mans race track.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans race track

The circuit was built in 1906 for the first Grand Prix Automobile de France organised by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, which was also founded the same year. The first race took place in 1923. The track is one of the longest in the world and now hosts several races each year. These include the classic car race Le Mans Classic; the Michelin Le Mans Cup created in 2016 for LMP3 prototypes and GT3 cars; and the 24 Hours for motorbikes and trucks. The success of the 24-hour motorsport endurance race at the Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans, also called Circuit de la Sarthe, hasn’t wavered since its creation; it attracts 250,000 spectators from all over the world and is broadcast to 110 million viewers. Visit the museum and the circuit for a great day out !

Horse riding

Horse riders of all abilities can ride on the estate and two stalls are available for guests to use at the property. The Boulerie Jump European horse centre is less than twenty kilometres away and offers vaulting taster sessions or horse concept leadership and teambuilding activities, events and competitions. There is also a riding club fifteen km away.

The Cité Plantagenet

Le Mans old town, also called the Cité Plantagenet, is most definitely worth a visit. Take a trip back in time with the Romantic and Gothic style Saint-Julien du Mans cathedral, cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and Renaissance-style mansions. The Carré Plantagenet and the Queen Bérengère Museum recount the history of the region from prehistoric times to the 19th century. A very well-preserved Roman wall surrounds the city.

Zoo and preserved nature spots

If you haven’t quite had your fill of animals, then why not delight the family with a trip to the zoo? La Flèche zoo (60 km from the property) is ranked among the top five zoos in France.

Walkers will love the hills and woods of the Alpes Mancelles. This preserved nature spot is dotted with quaint little villages such as Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, Saint-Cénéri-le-Genei or the fortified village of Bourg le Roi. The Alpes Mancelles culminate at 417 metres and are ideal for hiking and water sports.

The Loire Castles

The castles of the Loire are about one hundred kilometres away. The Chambord castle is the closest and is also the largest with 60 rooms to visit. And if you like the trophy room at your own chateau, then you will love the Hunting Room or Trophy Room at Chambord. It houses trophies donated by Marion Schuster, wife of Baron Rothschild and a keen hunter, in the late 1800s.

The landing beaches of Normandy

For something very different and a little further afield, you could head to Normandy to visit the D-Day landing beaches (Sword Beach, Omaha Beach). There are a number of commemorative monuments and war museums. Visit the Atlantic Wall Museum in Ouistreham or the D-Day Landing Museum in Arromanches to learn more about the historic events that took place here. The Caen Memorial is devoted more generally to the history of the 20th century and to world peace. These sites are about a two-hour drive away.
