Château Les Hauts de Garonne - Luxury property for rent in the Occitanie region

Château Les Hauts de Garonne is a luxury property for rent that combines a stately residence with stylish modern comfort and great amenities. The recent high-end refurbishment has kept the most aesthetic original features and maintained the theme of a discerning, period style. It is the epitome of French elegance.

The ground floor is laid out around a large entrance hall and comprises a succession of spacious reception rooms with tall windows which provide plenty of light and a lovely view of the grounds. Soft pastel shades have been used throughout for a bright and welcoming feel.

Original features such as the fireplace, wooden floor and exposed beams have been preserved in the main lounge, which is stylish and inviting. The TV lounge and the library are homely yet still have all the cachet of chateau style. There is also a billiards room where a plush red carpet and curtains set a striking scene.

Still on the ground floor, the kitchen is the only room to have been fully upgraded to take the pain out of preparing those castle banquets! It is simple, modern and well equipped with high-end facilities. Relaxed meals can be enjoyed in the kitchen or taken in the somewhat grander dining room which leads out to the pool. However, you may prefer to make the most of the weather here and dine al fresco, soaking up the sun and scenic views.

Moving upstairs, there are six spacious and inviting bedrooms on the first floor: four suites plus an extra bedroom and a dormitory for children. Like the rest of the château, aristocratic style is the watchword with furniture and soft furnishings reflecting the chateau’s past – think antique dressers and Toile de Jouys style prints. Again, the rooms are bright and sunny with large windows overlooking the grounds or the pool. The overall feel is exactly what springs to mind when evoking French castle living!

The four en-suite bathrooms are bright and spacious with a nod to the chateau’s history, such as traditional claw-footed bathtubs with a thoroughly modern twist.

The castle is set in six hectares of wooded parkland with rolling countryside beyond. If it’s peace and quiet you’re looking for, then you are in the right place! To the front of the chateau there is a private swimming pool with a space for poolside dining for refreshingly cool lunches during the hot summer months. There is also outdoor seating in the shade of a parasol for morning coffee or an evening aperitif as the sun goes down.

To the rear is a beautiful mature garden with trees that are over one hundred years old. Stroll around and reconnect with nature without leaving the property.

On the driveway leading up to the chateau is a tennis court and a guesthouse that can sleep one or two families independently from the main house. The guesthouse comprises a large living area with a lounge, kitchen and fireplace as well as four bedrooms and is decorated in a similar style to the chateau.

This property can comfortably accommodate seven families or eight couples.

French holiday chateau with pool and tennis, things to see and do nearby:

The best towns and villages to visit in the Lot

Auvillar, Pujols, Lauzerte and Monflanquin, are small medieval villages nearby and are officially listed as some of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. And it’s easy to see why - pretty pedestrian lanes decked with flowers are lined with white stone, red brick and timber-framed houses and arcades. These hilltop villages offer fabulous panoramic views of the valleys below. Historic churches, monuments and village squares attest to their rich past. Visit the lovely craft galleries Auvillar and Pujols to learn more about art the local culture. And, of course, you can finish up your visit at one of the typical restaurants for an authentic taste of the local French cuisine.

Agen is famous for two things: prunes and rugby. It is also generally agreed that it’s a great place to be. Wander the old pedestrian streets, admire the Haussmann-style buildings, and take in the chapel, St Caprais cathedral and the Jacobins church to soak up the city’s historic heritage. The Fine Arts museum is worth a visit: it’s one of the best in the Aquitaine region and the biggest musuem in SW France. And you won’t be able to miss the 662-metre long canal bridge, the second longest in France, which you can cross under or over on a barge, by bike or on foot.

Montauban, known as the pink town, is an hour's drive away and holds the title of an Art and History Town. See the Ingrès Bourdelle museum and St Jacques church. There is always something going on, with lots events and a packed cultural programme. The Place Nationale is flanked by double arcades and reflects the colours of the town. The old bridge which connects the historic centre and the Villebourbon district tells the tale of the town’s past. On the other side is the Montauban marina which is a peaceful spot.

Activities close to your rental castle

Horse riding, an introduction to truffle growing, mazes, and boat rides on a traditional gabare, are all on offer nearby.

Your holiday chateau is on the doorstep of the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park, so there are plenty of walking trails and cycle paths within a few kilometres of the property. The Circuit des Vallons is a great eight-kilometre walk that follows the beautiful valleys of the Roquebiard and Merle streams. For biking, the Garonne circuit is ideal. It follows the greenway and then continues to Lamagistère, a small village with lovely quays. The route covers thirty kilometres and continues through Auvillar. You can stop along the way for a picnic or turn back at any time.

Golfers can head to the Agen Bon-Encontre Golf Club. It is located a peaceful and gently sloped area and has a nine-hole course suitable for both beginners and advanced players. It is a 15-minute drive from the chateau.

Finally, for a great family day out, kids will be delighted by a trip to Happy Forest or the Walygator Sud-Ouest theme park. Happy Forest is one of the biggest treetop adventure sites in France and also has a wildlife park, escape games, laser games and orientation courses on site. Walygator Sud-Ouest has all sort of rides attractions, packed with thrills, spills and splashes for the whole family.

Enjoy the delicious Lot-et-Garonne local cuisine

People from south-west France take particular pride in their local cuisine. Eating well is serious business! Some of the most well-know specialities here are clafoutis with Agen prunes, Aligot, prune tourtière, fouace Aveyronnaise and Estofinade, a dish made with crumbled dried fish and mashed potatoes.

If you want to pick up some of the local specialities, we recommend: foie gras mi-cuit à l'Armagnac, lobster mousse with cognac, mackerel rillettes with lime, Gascony-grown mini-pineapples, and zebull'in, a traditional local beer. You’ll be sure to keep the whole family happy and take a taste of South-West France back home with you!
