Spirit of Dordogne – Luxury castle for rent in France

A beautiful setting

This beautifully preserved castle is simply gorgeous inside and out. The original building was built in the 14th-century and additions were made in the 16th and 19th centuries, resulting in the blend of architectural eras that is so typical of the Perigord region. Jutting above a tributary of the Dordogne river, the base is anchored in a rocky overhang and makes an impressive vantage point. The location, like the chateau itself, is unique.

A castle with traditional architecture

There is a drawbridge and a gate house at the entrance which lead to a courtyard and the Renaissance-style main chateau with its turreted towers. Inside, the castle has been exquisitely decorated. Carefully selected hues and smooth materials bring warmth to exposed stone walls and each room has its own style, cleverly combining the grandeur of antique furniture with an inviting feel. Bedrooms have exposed timber beams and fireplaces, and a period dining room is offset by a resolutely modern kitchen. With eight bedrooms, this property is ideal for family get-togethers and special occasions. Guests will feel privileged yet right at home, against a backdrop that’s hard to beat. Outside, there is a heated swimming pool and gardens that are a delight to stroll around. The setting is spellbindingly quiet, punctuated only by the rushing waters that flow below, with views that stretch over the valley.

The Perigord, a historically rich region

This property is ideally located in the heart of the Dordogne, within easy reach of many local sights and attractions. Perigord is where France has its strongest mediaeval roots and counts more than 1,000 castles which attest to the region’s tumultuous past.

This area is home to the organisation that dispenses the official accolade of “Most Beautiful Villages in France”, and there a good few of them on the doorstep. Visit picturesque towns such as La Roque Gargeac, nestled between a sheer rockface and the water’s edge, or La Roque St Christophe, a UNESCO troglodyte site. The Perigord is one of the oldest prehistoric sites, and cliffs, caverns and caves are the order of the day. The famous Lascaux caves with their Neanderthal artwork are well worth a visit, but there are lots of similar, less well-known sites that are equally as impressive. If you’re looking for something more likely to engage youngsters, try Prehisto Parc in Les Eyzies which brings history to life with life-size replicas of prehistoric people and animals. Another great visit is the Jardins de Marqueyssac in Vézac, stunning garden is in the grounds of an 18th-century chateau, featuring imaginatively sheared hedges and shrubs.

France is synonymous for both castles and food – head to Beynac or Castelnaud for the former, and Sarlat-La-Canéda for the latter. Sarlat-La-Canéda is a picturesque fortified town with the honey-coloured walls and lauze stone roofs so typical of the Périgord Noir. It’s also the foodie capital of the south west with lots of rich delicacies such as foie gras and truffles.

More generally, the Dordogne is great for easy, outdoor living, with rivers and countryside that lend themselves to walking, cycling, canoeing and scenic picnics.

July 2021 / One week stay : "We would highly recommend the stunning Chateau Spirit of Dordogne. Perched high above the river it offers the opportunity to live in a magnificent piece of history. The photos donâ??t do it justice. The area is beautiful with lovely towns and villages nearby. Probably not best for groups with small children."
