What's On in Provence

Cultural Calendar
From inland Provence to the Côte d’Azur, the South of France lives to the rhythm of age-old traditions and world-class cultural events. Between internationally renowned festivals, lively local fêtes, night markets, and intimate performances, every season is an opportunity to celebrate the Provençal and Mediterranean art of living. While summer hosts the majority of these festivities, villages perched on hilltops, ancient cities, and seaside resorts come alive throughout the year with a vibrant and colorful cultural calendar.

No overview of the region’s cultural scene would be complete without mentioning the legendary Avignon Festival, a true institution of contemporary theatre since 1947. Every July, the City of Popes transforms into an immense open-air stage, welcoming performers, artists, and theatre enthusiasts from around the world. The official programme takes over iconic historical sites, while the bustling Festival OFF spreads across streets, cafés, and public squares with hundreds of performances. Similarly, the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles, held from July to September, turns the city into a global hub of contemporary photography, featuring avant-garde exhibitions, outdoor installations, and workshops.

Along the Côte d’Azur, the iconic Cannes Film Festival steals the spotlight every May, drawing international movie stars, directors, producers, and cinema lovers to the glittering Croisette. Red carpet premieres, glamorous soirées, and industry showcases mark this world-famous event. Throughout the summer, the region also pulses to the sounds of music festivals. The Nice Jazz Festival and Jazz à Juan, Europe’s oldest jazz festival, offer open-air concerts beneath century-old pines or in Mediterranean gardens, hosting legendary performers and rising talents alike. In Cannes, the Nuits Musicales du Suquet stage classical, jazz, and world music performances under the stars.

Time-honored traditions remain very much alive. Each February, the Nice Carnival, one of the oldest and most spectacular in the world, fills the streets with oversized papier-mâché heads, enormous flower floats, and showers of confetti. In the Provençal countryside, events like the Transhumance Festivals in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Les Baux celebrate rural customs each spring, with herds of sheep parading through villages, traditional markets, and countryside feasts.

During summer evenings, villages from Provence to the Riviera host night markets filled with local artisans, food producers, and street performers. Under strings of fairy lights, visitors browse handmade jewelry, linen garments, pottery, and regional delicacies. In Arles, the Les Suds Festival enchants audiences every July with world music performances in the city’s ancient arenas and hidden courtyards.

Gastronomy is also honored year-round at countless food fairs and farmers’ markets celebrating local specialties. Expect lavender honey, Provençal wines, goat cheeses, olive oils, and seasonal delicacies in festive, family-friendly atmospheres. Highlights include the New Olive Oil Festival in Mougins, the Candied Fruit Fair in Apt each December, and summer’s Cavaillon Melon Festival and Lavender Festival in Sault, both beloved for their authenticity and Provençal charm.

The region’s rich historic and natural heritage also serves as a stunning backdrop for exceptional artistic events. The Carrières de Lumières in Les Baux-de-Provence immerse visitors in monumental light and sound shows projected onto ancient quarry walls, while châteaux such as those in Cagnes-sur-Mer, Entrecasteaux, and La Napoule host exhibitions, concerts, and nocturnal performances. Along the coast, open-air cinema screenings, firework festivals in Cannes and Antibes, and seaside jazz concerts create a carefree, festive summer atmosphere.

Whether you're passionate about cinema, a jazz enthusiast, a lover of local folklore, or simply curious, Provence and the Côte d’Azur offer a cultural agenda of rare richness. Amidst olive groves, turquoise coves, hilltop villages, and Belle Époque mansions, every event becomes an invitation to experience the South’s inimitable art of living, where heritage, creativity, and joie de vivre shine in perfect harmony.
