- Castelmorond d'Albray is the smallest village in France, covering just 3.54 hectares. It is a delightful fortified village that could be plucked straight out of the Middle Ages. Perched on a rocky hilltop, Castelmorond d'Albray features 17th and 18th-century stone buildings with burnt orange roofs. Stroll along the flower-lined streets and admire the historic houses, the remains of the ramparts, the wash house and the fortified gate along the way.

Make sure you visit the castle which will plunge you into the heart of the region’s tumultuous history. See the old brick icehouse, the archaeology museum, the prison, the moat, the room of secrets and the intriguing hall of ghosts of historical figures. The castle also gives you a great viewpoint over the valley.

- Monsegur, reputed for being the only high-altitude bastide town in the region, Monsegur has retained its original medieval layout. The town square has been beautifully renovated and features a stunning glass and cast-iron hall, a typical Languedoc-style bastide church and a Gothic tower. Walk for a kilometre from the city walls to reach the towpath then enjoy a long, shaded walk along the Dropt river.

- Bergerac is a lovely medieval town which bears the official title of an Art & History town.
