Deauville beach is a two kilometres stretch of sand dotted with colourful parasols and flanked by beach huts along the length of Les Planches, the famous wooden boardwalk that was designed for ladies to keep their long skirts clean back in the day.
The iconic Normandy beaches that played such a poignant role in the Second World War are most definitely worth a visit. The closest to Deauville is Sword Beach in Ouistreham. Taking the time to visit the museums and memorials along the coast provides an excellent insight into the Second World War and makes for a meaningful day out for visitors of all ages.
It gets quite blowy here, making it the perfect spot for sailing, windsurfing or stand up paddle boarding. Deauville has two marinas and a yacht school.
Deauville has an impressive array of designer boutiques, chic restaurants and a plethora of pavement cafés. The buildings are stunning, with their half-timbered facades that are packed with history and character.
Just down the coast is the mediaeval seafaring town of Honfleur. Roam through cobbled streets, stroll along the picturesque harbour or climb the hill up to its delightful 17th-century chapel.
Every September, the town hosts a 10-day American Film Festival which celebrates the silver screen in all its forms, from Hollywood blockbusters to independent films.
