Un Domaine en Provence - Luxury rental with pool

Surrounded by vines and woodland at the gateway to Provence, this stunning property lies on the edge of the Luberon and is the ultimate luxury bolthole to escape from the complexities of modern life. It is a former Roman temple which was converted to a priory in the 14th century and has been producing wine ever since. Its historic architecture is typical of the Luberon region, with terracotta tiles and a tall tower, and the property has retained an atmosphere of peacefulness and contemplation.

The Domaine lies in the Rhône wine region and produces two different appellations: the highly reputed Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the more widely appreciated Côtes du Rhône. Wine connoisseurs will enjoy roaming the vineyards and learning more about the local wines – this is the home of fine wines such as Beaumes de Venise, Vacqueyras and Gigondas, and wine tasting and food pairing sessions can be held on site.

A cosy castle

The property can sleep up to 17 people and has eight bedrooms, making it ideal for groups of friends or an extended family getaway. The interior has been carefully orchestrated using patterned fabrics, period furniture and ornamental features to create a quintessentially French décor. Bedrooms and bathrooms are bright and spacious with tall windows which draw in sunshine and stunning scenery. The shared areas are equally as generous, with a vast living room, a dining room that can seat up to 18 guests and a library complete with pool table to while away the time out of the hot summer sun. Not that there’s any need to retreat inside to escape the heat, though; the garden has an inviting rectangular pool flanked by comfortable sun loungers and plenty of shady spots underneath the boughs of the mature trees or wrought-iron pergolas. The patio has comfortable seating and dining areas which are ideal for soaking up the scenic views, relaxing, and lingering over al fresco lunches. The garden also features beds of aromatic herbs, lavender and beautifully maintained lawns.

Chateau and wine tourism

This luxury property is on the edge of the Luberon, near Avignon. It’s one of the most picturesque regions of France, known for its idyllic rural charm, leisurely lifestyle and fabulous climate so often depicted in books and paintings. Unsurprisingly, wine tourism is a flourishing industry, and local vineyards and wineries are only too happy to share their passion with visitors and teach them about the local Rhone Valley wines.

Avignon, the city of Popes

The nearest town is picture-perfect Avignon, dubbed the City of Popes, much of which is a UNESCO world heritage site. Indeed, it has a strong papal history and was the refuge of popes who fled there from Rome in the 14th century. The town’s most striking landmark is the imposing white-walled Palais des Popes with its four fortress towers and crenulated walls. Admire the architecture from outside or visit the twenty or so rooms inside the palace for the full experience. Another of Avignon’s iconic sights is the Pont St Bénézet, a 12th-century bridge which inspired the popular French song Sur le Pont d’Avignon and which is truncated halfway across the river after part of it was washed away in the 15th century. Spend a day taking in the sights, buy fresh produce from the market, and perhaps take a lunchtime cruise along the Rhone to see the stunning skyline from another perspective.

It is ideally located for exploring the Vaucluse, the Luberon, the Alpilles and the Camargue. East of Avignon is the Sorgues region. Sights include the Grottes de Thouzon - fabulous limestone caves which offer great respite from the hot summer sun - and many picturesque villages which embody the charm of Provence – l'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is Provence in a nutshell with its bright colours, streams, waterwheels and antique markets. Browse the streets, settle down at a pavement café, and soak up the vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere.

Moving anticlockwise, south of Avignon is the foothills of the Alpilles and its natural park. Walkers, nature lovers and photographers will appreciate the beauty, calm and stunning scenery of the park and the idyllic villages of St-Rémy-de-Provence and Les-Baux-de-Provence. Continuing round to the West of Avignon, you’ll come to the Pont de Gard, an impressive and perfectly conserved three-tier Roman aqueduct which spans the Gardon river and epitomises the region’s history and architecture. Finally, the Roman town of Arles and the Camargue region (known as France’s Wild West) are within easy reach and packed with things to see and do.

This corner of the South of France abounds with picturesque towns and villages, hills and valleys, which form the perfect backdrop for your holiday in France, whether walking, cycling, canoeing or simply strolling leisurely around the sights.

Guest review about Un Domaine en Provence

  • Anne S. (Paris), 10/09/2019

Translated from french / 12 days stay / August 2019 / "We had a wonderful stay at the chateau, a perfect place for family and friends gathering in beautiful bedrooms with original and fine decoration, vast living spaces and shaded terraces. We enjoyed the prestations offered, breakfast and cleaning of the rooms. We were feeling so good at the property that we even quite didn't go out, just once. Dolce far niente and wine tasting were our main activities. Thank you so much for your invaluable help and your willingness."

  • Naseem H. (USA), 19/08/2019

One week stay / July 2019 / "Un Domaine en Provence is a beautiful property. It is set in a vineyard and it is very nicely furnished. The bedrooms in general are spacious and most command lovely views. The property is serviced daily and a generous breakfast is prepared every morning by the staff. While rural in setting the property is very close to Avignon. The only negative is the unreliability of wifi. We recommend this villa highly." Reply from Chivillas : We inform you that the fiber will be installed soon to offer a better service to our clients."
