Château Saint-Emilion ou Dordogne dates back to the Middle Ages – it was built between the 12th and 15th centuries. Its fortress walls and crenelated turret identify its military history without hinting at the luxury and elegance that lie inside.
The property has been fully refurbished with style and finesse to preserve period features and embrace modern day luxury.
The old terracotta and parquet floors, stone walls, woodwork and stairs have been lovingly updated to keep the castle’s beautiful authenticity while creating an uplifting and welcoming atmosphere.
Each of the ground floor rooms serves a purpose: there is a reception room, a music room, a games room, a television room, a study, a dining room and a kitchen. And with the help of a musician in your party, the melodious tones of the grand piano will resonate throughout. Elegant sofas and armchairs have curved details that nod to the mouldings on the wall and invite you to relax. Baroque-inspired black furniture is classy and harmonious, and gilding and chandeliers complete the décor.
The kitchen ticks all the boxes as the hub of the home – high-end rustic chic, plenty of space and great equipment to cater for numbers, with a range cooker and a wood burning stove. Stone walls, a tiled floor and huge square-paned windows combine to create a bright and relaxed space where you’ll feel right at home.
Moving into the grand dining room, a beautiful wooden table strikes an impressive contrast with the sky blue walls. All that’s left is to gather round to enjoy what France does best – food, wine and taking time to enjoy friends and conversation!
Château Saint-Emilion ou Dordogne has ten bedrooms and suites and ten bathrooms, all of the same level of style and comfort.
There are six spacious suites with en-suite bathrooms and two smaller double bedrooms which also have their own bathrooms, although not en suite. There is another double room on the ground floor which has an en-suite bathroom and a toilet outside the room.
The final bedroom is great for children and teens, with bunk beds, a pull-out bed and a sofa bed. It also has its own private bathroom.
The comfortable bedrooms are spacious and stylish, with mouldings on the walls and elegant furniture that has been chosen with care. The bathrooms are something special with a luxurious retro chic design. The curvy taps, bathtubs and basins have a timeless vintage feel that fits the place perfectly. The walls and floors are all about elegance, featuring noble materials.
The tower is in the centre of the castle and houses a gym on the upper floor with weight training and yoga equipment and a TV to play training videos. Working up a sweat indoors is optional though – the huge grounds outside are also ideal for exercise.
Like all fortified castles, Château Saint-Emilion ou Dordogne is situated on the top of a hill. It overlooks the Dordogne valley with a magnificent view of the Périgord region in the distance. There are lots of opportunites to admire the scenery from various viewpoints and terraces. This is rural France – the chateau is in the heart of the countryside and the finest French terroir. It is surrounded by walnut orchards and 35 hectares of sprawling grounds that are perfect for walks in the fresh air.
There are a number of relaxing spots outside, making it easy to enjoy the sunny climate. The castle’s rooms open out onto a quaint paved courtyard that reflects the warmth on its stone walls.
The swimming pool is situated on the other side of the building from the enclosed courtyard, flanked by trees and lawn. The pool is heated and treated with salt, creating a feeling of lightness in the water. The pool deck is perfect for peaceful sunbathing, interrupted only by birdsong.
There is a table tennis table and an unheated outdoor room that can be used for yoga, games, or whatever suits your needs.
The chateau is exceptionally well located. There is a small village nearby which is about a 20-minute walk. It has all the essentials – a grocery store, newspaper shop, wine shop and restaurants. There are more shops within a 10-15 kilometre radius.
The property is also close to the Dordogne River and the local canoe club – it’s just a five-minute drive. This is the Gironde département of France, at the gateway to the Périgord region. Périgord is divided into four areas, north, south, east and west, identified as different colours depending on what the area is known for: Purple Périgord for its vines, White Périgord for its chalky soil, Black Périgord for its oak forests and Green Périgord for its countryside. The region spans 9,000 km² and offers a plentiful array of castles, prehistoric sites, medieval villages, gardens, abbeys, cathedrals, and wine estates to choose from. It’s brimming with history and world-class heritage.
As its name suggests, Château Saint-Emilion ou Dordogne lies at the centre of two major French wine regions: the vineyards of Bordeaux to the west and Bergerac and Monbazillac to the east. Monbazillac, a lesser-known sweet wine, is grown a few dozen kilometres from the castle, and it’s the same distance to the Bergerac estates in the Purple Périgord region.
Even closer, however are the prestigious vineyards of Bordeaux. There are several estates within five kilometres from the chateau, and the most highly reputed appellations such as AOC Saint-Emilion and Saint-Emilion Grand Cru are less than 30 kilometres away. In Saint-Emilion, you will receive a warm welcome at the wineries and in the charming medieval village itself, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fronsac and Pomerol are only a short distance away, and Bordeaux wine lovers will continue on to the Côtes de Blaye, Médoc, Graves and Entre-deux-Mers. Château Saint-Emilion ou Dordogne is the perfect choice for the ultimate wine holiday in the vineyards of southwest France.
Château Saint-Emilion ou Dordogne can comfortably accommodate four families with children or six couples.
